This training will explore the link between tobacco use and cancer, highlighting the increased health risks and treatment challenges for patients who continue smoking. Individuals receiving treatment for cancer have significantly better outcomes if they are tobacco-free, while those who continue to use tobacco experience poorer treatment responses and an increased risk of developing secondary cancers. Participants will learn the fundamentals of tobacco treatment and give an overview of tobacco treatment medications and counseling which are the gold standard for treating tobacco use. Having discussions with patients about their tobacco use can be complicated, especially when they are being treated for tobacco-related cancers, and we will look at some of the issues and principles that can be helpful in navigating sensitive conversations with patients about tobacco use in the context of cancer care.
