Motivational Interviewing for Tobacco Treatment – Skills Practice

This workshop is designed to help healthcare providers strengthen their Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills to effectively engage in conversations about tobacco and nicotine use, and to support increased motivation for change. Prior training and experience in using MI is helpful but not required to participate in this workshop. A high-level review of the concepts and strategies of MI will be presented, followed by a demonstration of how MI can be used in a group treatment setting. Participants will then practice MI skills, including open-ended questions, affirmations, and reflections. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of how to incorporate MI into your current work with individuals who use tobacco and other nicotine products.

Foundations of Client-Centered Tobacco Treatment for Behavioral Health Organizations

Empowering Youth Providers: Core Skills in Client-Centered Tobacco Treatment

The session provides foundation in adolescent brain development and explains why nicotine exposure during the teenage years can be especially harmful. Health Systems Addressing Tobacco Use Among Patients

This 90-minute virtual training will explore how health systems can effectively address tobacco use among patients by incorporating screening, brief intervention, referral pathways, and follow-up into routine clinical care. Participants will explore evidence-based strategies for optimizing workflows, strengthening documentation, practices, and ensuring staff competency. The session will also provide an overview of the Maine QuitLink referral process and available treatment services.

Youth Tobacco & Nicotine Use in Maine: Insights from the 2025 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey

This 1-hour webinar will provide an in-depth review of youth tobacco and nicotine use findings from the 2025 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey (MIYHS), a biennial survey of Maine students in grades 5–12 that monitors health behaviors, attitudes, and risk factors. A subject matter expert from the Maine CDC will join us to help interpret statewide trends and discuss emerging patterns in youth tobacco and nicotine product use.
Participants will gain a clearer understanding of the changing nicotine landscape affecting Maine youth, including shifts in product popularity and associated risk behaviors. The session will also highlight evidence-based cessation and prevention programs and outline how to refer students to appropriate support services, such as My Life, My Quit (age 13 – 17) and the Maine QuitLink (for students age 18+).

This 1-hour webinar equips participants with practical skills in Motivational Interviewing (MI) and goal setting to effectively support individuals pursuing a tobacco- and nicotine-free lifestyle.
Participants will explore why MI is a powerful, person-centered approach for guiding people through the stages of change with empathy and purpose. The session builds confidence in using essential OARS communication skills -open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summarization-to help individuals explore their motivations for healthy change. This webinar also introduces strategies for helping individuals set realistic, attainable goals that promote incremental progress and long-term success.
