Dr. Barbra Schillo, Vice President, Truth Initiative Schroeder Institute

About the Speaker: Dr. Barbara Schillo has over 20 years of experience in conducting applied research, managing research and public health programs and leading organizational management. At Truth Initiative, she provides leadership for research that examines the impact of tobacco-related policies on youth and young adults. Prior to joining Truth Initiative, Schillo was a vice president at ClearWaySM Minnesota for 17 years, where she was instrumental in developing a nationally-recognized research grant-making program and leading research efforts to advance policy. She provided leadership in disseminating and translating science into public policy and practice and led efforts to develop highly innovative quitting programs that have served as a model for other states. Schillo currently chairs the board of directors for the North American Quitline Consortium. She has a Ph.D. from Michigan State University in community psychology.

Kevin O’Flaherty, Director of Advocacy, Campaign for Tobacco- Free Kids

About the Speaker: In his role as Director of Advocacy for the Northeast Region at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Kevin works with non-profit organizations, state programs, and other interested parties to help change public policy in efforts to reduce tobacco use, especially among youth. His region includes 9 states in the Northeast, and also includes Indiana.
Kevin began his career in public health policy working for US Congressman Ken Bentsen from Texas, and then at the Center for Research on Minority Health at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Prior to coming to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, he worked for the American Cancer Society in Texas and Rhode Island, and was ACS’s State Advocacy Director in Rhode Island when the Ocean State went smokefree in 2004. He has played a leadership role in dozens of state and local tobacco policy campaigns including smokefree, cigarette tax, OTP tax equity, T-21 and other evidence-based policy interventions. Most recently, he led the Campaign’s efforts in Massachusetts to ban the sales of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol combustibles.
In theory, he lives in Connecticut with his wife Mary and his dog, Moby. But in summer, you’re more likely to find him on his sailboat The Texan.

9:00-10:30am: Reaching and Engaging LGBTQ+ Communities in Tobacco Control

Dr. Scout- Deputy Director- National LGBT Cancer Network

About the Speaker: Scout is the Deputy Director of the National LGBT Cancer Network and the principal investigator of the CDC-funded LGBTQ tobacco-related cancer disparity network. In this capacity he spends much of his time providing technical assistance for governmental tobacco and cancer focusing agencies expanding their reach and engagement with LGBTQ populations. He leads a team of specialists in the Rhode Island office who focus especially on building tools and sharing strategies across state departments of health. Scout is also an expert cultural competency trainer and sought after public speaker. He has a long history in health policy analysis and a particular interest in expanding LGBTQ surveillance and research. He is a member of the NIH Council of Councils and the Chair of the NIH Sexual and Gender Minority Work Group. His work has won him recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives, two state governments, and many city governments. Scout is an openly transgender father of three, a vegetarian, an avid hiker, and is currently training for a half marathon.
