SUMMARY:Webinar: Counseling in Tobacco Treatment: The Intersection of Motivational Interviewing\, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy\, and the Transtheoretical Model of Change
DESCRIPTION:The two main components of effective Tobacco Use Disorder treatment are Counseling and Medication. This webinar will focus on the counseling aspect of treatment\, specifically\, when and where (and why) to employ strategies tailored to the current needs and goals of the patient.  To accomplish this\, we will look at the intersection of Motivational Interviewing\, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy\, and the Transtheoretical Model of Change. The goal of counseling is to engage the patient. Engagement means that a client is involved in a process where his or her own needs\, preferences\, and abilities are balanced with your professional interventions to create a positive outcome. \nPresenter: Edward J. SUMMARY:Webinar: Tobacco Needs Assessments for New Mainer Communities
DESCRIPTION:In the Fall of 2021\, the MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence (CTI) put out a Request for Funding Proposal for partners across the state who would be interested in assessing tobacco use and exposure of secondhand smoke within Maine’s immigrant communities. The purpose of this initiative was to collect information on beliefs of New Mainer individuals\, families\, and communities about tobacco\, then evaluate it to better inform tobacco prevention and control efforts in Maine. Chosen grantees were encouraged to evaluate a number of social factors that could be impacting these attitudes and beliefs around tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure\, including but not limited to culture\, gender\, healthy behaviors\, and access to health services. CTI funded four organizations to pursue this work across Maine: AK Health and Social Services\, Healthy Communities of the Capital Area\, Maine Immigrant & Refugee Services\, and Portland Public Health. During this presentation\, each of the four grantees will share how data was collected\, they will compare themes\, and they will share next steps on how the research will inform future programmatic strategies. \nPresenters: April Hughes\, MPH\, PS-C; Val Johnstone; Abdikadir Negeye\, MA\,BA\, MHRT/C; and Candace Johnson

SUMMARY:Webinar: Treating Tobacco Together: Intensive Skills Training - The Main(e) Points
DESCRIPTION:In order to effectively treat Tobacco Use Disorder\, a healthcare provider requires a specific combination of knowledge\, skills\, and abilities\, along with affirmative attitudes\, values\, and beliefs that support them in this important and challenging work. Many providers already have key foundational attributes and abilities such as compassion\, empathy\, and genuineness\, as well as engagement skills\, counseling theory\, and experience with substance use disorders. Building on these strengths that are already present\, CTI’s Treating Tobacco Together: Intensive Skills Training provides participants with an advanced level of tobacco specific information that is necessary to treat tobacco use disorder in our clients and patients with competence and confidence. This webinar will outline the main areas and key points of Intensive Skills Training\, and will inform you of what to expect should you elect to participate in this training. \nPresenter: Edward J. SUMMARY:Webinar: Understanding Barriers and Opportunities to Reduce Tobacco Use and Exposure to Secondhand Smoke Among Maine Veterans
DESCRIPTION:In March 2021\, MaineHealth’s Center for Tobacco Independence (CTI) enlisted Hart Consulting’s services to understand more about tobacco use among Maine’s veterans. The discovery project included three components: focus groups with veterans\, key informant interviews with veteran service organizations\, and a web scan of state and federal resources for veterans on tobacco use. This presentation will share the findings from the project including Maine veterans’ experiences with tobacco use\, interest in stopping the use of tobacco\, membership support for not allowing smoking in veteran social clubs\, and advice on best ways to connect with veterans. \nPresenter: Patricia Hart\, MS\, CPH – Hart Consulting Inc\nEarn 1.0 CHES Credits

SUMMARY:Webinar: Brief Solution-Focused Therapy - Applications for Tobacco Use Disorder Treatment
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Edward J. Perka\, Jr.\, CASAC\, ICADC\, NCTTP – MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence\nBrief Solution-Focused Therapy (BSFT) is a short-term goal-focused evidence-based therapeutic approach which helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than focusing on problems. In the most basic sense\, BSFT is a hope friendly\, positive emotion-eliciting and future-oriented vehicle for formulating\, motivating\, achieving\, and sustaining desired behavioral change. In this webinar\, we will discuss some of the key concepts and tools of BSFT\, including goal development questions\, looking for previous solutions\, looking for exceptions\, present and future-focused questions vs. past-oriented focus\, compliments\, the Miracle Question\, and scaling questions. \nEarn 1.0 CME
