SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing for Tobacco Treatment - Skills Practice
DESCRIPTION:Registration Closes 9/17/26 @ 1pm ET \nFees: $25 for Maine Residents | $50 for non-Maine Residents \nApproved for 1.75 CME/CEU Credits \nDescription: \nSmoking-related disease remains the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. While about 70% of people who smoke want to quit – and many make multiple attempts – healthcare providers often feel challenged when discussing tobacco use with patients. As a result\, advice to quit may unintentionally come across as directive or lacking empathy. \nThis workshop is designed to help healthcare providers strengthen their Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills to effectively engage in conversations about tobacco and nicotine use\, and to support increased motivation for change. \nPrior training and experience in using MI is helpful but not required to participate in this workshop. \nA high-level review of the concepts and strategies of MI will be presented\, followed by a demonstration of how MI can be used in a group treatment setting. Participants will then practice MI skills\, including open-ended questions\, affirmations\, and reflections. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of how to incorporate MI into your current work with individuals who use tobacco and other nicotine products.
