SUMMARY:Foundations of Client-Centered Tobacco Treatment for Behavioral Health Organizations
DESCRIPTION:People with behavioral health conditions smoke at significantly higher rates—two to three times more—than the general population\, leading to a disproportionate burden of tobacco-related illness and early death. SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing for Tobacco Treatment - Skills Practice
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Edward J. Perka Jr.\, CASAC\, NCNTT\, MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence   \nDescription \nSmoking-related disease remains the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. While about 70% of people who smoke want to quit – and many make multiple attempts – healthcare providers often feel challenged when discussing tobacco use with patients. As a result\, advice to quit may unintentionally come across as directive or lacking empathy. \nThis workshop is designed to help healthcare providers strengthen their Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills to effectively engage in conversations about tobacco and nicotine use\, and to support increased motivation for change. \nPrior training and experience in using MI is helpful but not required to participate in this workshop. \nA high-level review of the concepts and strategies of MI will be presented\, followed by a demonstration of how MI can be used in a group treatment setting. Participants will then practice MI skills\, including open-ended questions\, affirmations\, and reflections. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of how to incorporate MI into your current work with individuals who use tobacco and other nicotine products. \nObjectives \n\nIdentify the four elements of the Spirit of MI.\nDescribe the foundational OARS strategies of MI.\nExplain the four processes of MI.\nDemonstrate increased comfort using core MI strategies.\nBuild confidence and competence in applying MI concepts in tobacco treatment.\nIdentify opportunities for ongoing practice and integration of MI skills.\n\nFees: $50 for Maine Residents\, $75 for Non-Maine Residents \nCME/CEU: 1.75 credits available for attendance of live training \nRegistration closes May 5\, 2026 at 12pm

SUMMARY:Webinar: Addressing Youth Tobacco Use: Key Treatment Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Dr. Edward Bender\, MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence Medical Director  \n1 CHES & 1 CME credit approved with live attendance of webinar \nThis session will provide a brief overview of the seven frontline medications for nicotine treatment. It will also explore how adolescent brain development influences their use of specific tobacco products\, including e-cigarettes and combustible tobacco. Youth tobacco treatment presents unique challenges\, including the lack of FDA-approved medications for adolescents and the complexities introduced by the still-developing adolescent brain. These factors create both obstacles and opportunities in treatment planning. The session will review key evidence\, guidelines\, and prescribing recommendations for pharmacotherapy in youth tobacco treatment\, with a focus on safety and efficacy. Participants will also learn effective strategies for engaging adolescents both individually and within family settings\, utilizing motivational interviewing\, behavioral counseling\, and family-centered interventions to support successful tobacco treatment.

SUMMARY:The Foundations of Client-Centered Tobacco Treatment for Cancer Care Providers
DESCRIPTION:  \nRegistration Closes on April 1\, 2025 at 11:30AM ET \nThis training will explore the link between tobacco use and cancer\, highlighting the increased health risks and treatment challenges for patients who continue smoking. Individuals receiving treatment for cancer have significantly better outcomes if they are tobacco-free\, while those who continue to use tobacco experience poorer treatment responses and an increased risk of developing secondary cancers. Participants will learn the fundamentals of tobacco treatment and give an overview of tobacco treatment medications and counseling which are the gold standard for treating tobacco use. Having discussions with patients about their tobacco use can be complicated\, especially when they are being treated for tobacco-related cancers\, and we will look at some of the issues and principles that can be helpful in navigating sensitive conversations with patients about tobacco use in the context of cancer care. \n\nCHES Credits: 1.25 Credits Available with live training attendance\nCME Credits: 1.25 Credits Available with live training attendance
