Opportunities for Change: Addressing Tobacco and Nicotine Use in Behavioral Health Settings
Research shows that providing tobacco treatment in the behavioral health setting is critically important for improving the health outcomes of this population. Join other behavioral health professionals for a virtual training to learn more about the health burden of tobacco and nicotine on individuals with behavioral health conditions. The MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence administers tobacco treatment trainings on behalf of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC), Maine Department of Health and Human Services. This training will support Behavioral Health Professionals in various ways, including:
- Enhancing existing skills to utilize low barrier strategies that will support clients in reducing their use or quitting use of various products.
- Increasing understanding of the health burden of tobacco and nicotine on individuals with behavioral health conditions.
- Discussing real and perceived barriers to providing treatment in mental health and substance use settings.
- Increasing understanding of services targeted to this population through the Maine QuitLink.
CMEs/CEUs will be available for this training.

Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems – What You Need to Know About Vaping: 1.0 Hour of CME Available
This course is designed to address Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS). There are four different modules that each focus on different aspects on ENDS. This course consists of an overview of ENDS products, the factors that contributed to the growth of ENDS use among young people, the evolution of products and the recent flavor restrictions. You will also learn about tools for treatment for youth who use ENDS and the potential benefits of transitioning to an ENDS device.
The Health Burdens of Tobacco and Nicotine Use: 0.5 Hours of CME Available
The course is designed to address the health burdens of tobacco and nicotine use. There are four different modules that each focus on the health burdens of a different tobacco product.
Tobacco Products, Prevalence, Burden and Environmental Factors: 0.5 Hours of CME Available
This course uses interactive activities and quizzes to provide a thorough introduction to the topic. In this course you will meet several characters that will introduce you tobacco products, prevalence of use, tobacco’s burden on specific populations and environment factors that contribute to use.
Tobacco Treatment Medications:
The Training and Education Program offers two half-hour online courses about tobacco treatment medications. By completing both courses, participants can earn one hour of free CMEs.
1: Increasing Quit Success Using Tobacco Treatment Medications (0.5 Hours of CME Available)
This course uses videos and quizzes to provide a thorough introduction to the topic. It follows two patients who want to use medications to quit, outlining prescription considerations, proper usage, contraindications and side effects.
2: Tobacco Treatment Medications – Myths vs. Facts (0.5 Hours of CME Available)
This course examines several myths – false or outdated beliefs – about tobacco treatment medications. Using quizzes, vignettes and interactive activities, the course provides factual information, including how you can apply it when working with clients or patients.
